7 October - 10 October 2009
We arrive at the island of "Iron´s place" and our instant first impressions are: "WOW!!" "absolutely stunning". In front of us there are white sands, crystal clear waters and wooden huts right on the beach. This is what we will be calling home for the next 3 nights - perfect.
We are shown to our huts, the Lees get the prime location and our neighbours Clayton and Ben are not too far away.
The Lees pad below - the one with 2 white chairs out the front
This is like fantasy island, however without all the bells and whistles. The toilet is operated by throwing a bucketful of salt water down it and the "shower" is a big bucket of fresh water, which contains a smaller bucket that you use to rinse yourself with. There is no electricity and no running water, but none of that matters, included in the price we get all our 3 meals that are prepared for us by the Kuna people, on BBQ´s.
The boys check out the view......
The Kuna pepople blow hot and cold - they are not exactly the friendliest people in the world, and you better not take a photo of them cause it will cost you $1 a pop. To top it off there is a 5 day festival and majority of the Kuna´s are hammered so its difficult to get anything organised. We ended up missing our day trip that was included in our package because the bloke was too hungover. But none of that matters, we are in San Blas.....
Our days are spent playing beach volleyball with the locals and a group of Israelis. Snorkelling, drinking, eating (we end up getting lobster for 2/3 dinners) and just having a fabulous time.
On the first day, we speak to Mats (captain of the yacht we will be sailing on), who is frantcially needing to meet us as he has no money. With the help of some locals we explain to him where we are, and within two hours he and his yacht arrive.
Pic of "De Capo" (thats the name of the yacht)
Mats asks us how much cash are we able to give him, to be safe we say US$500, we want to hold some dosh back just in case he never comes back! We are slightly concerned that he is so disorganised, however we put this to the back of our minds. We agree to set sail around the San Blas islands on 10 October, and within 20 mins he has gone. We start wondering who are crewmates will be and hope that they are at the very least tolerable.
The weather at San Blas was changeable and we experienced our first storm on the first night. Our backpacks got drenched as the rain blew through the gaps of our little hut, soaking us with it. It didn´t matter though as the next day it was glorious and everything dried out quickly.
You will all be pleased to know that Adrian has a few more dance moves - courtesy of Clayton - the one move he especially loves is called "dusting it off". No doubt its coming to a party near you soon.....
