The departure...

Saturday, 1 August 2009
Feeling very hungover after Gordon threw us a truly outstanding final farewell - we just love those farewell drinks!

Early train from Darlo to London, get to London new experience - tube journey to Heathrow (forget the Heathrow express) start as you mean to go on.

Chaos at Terminal 5, British Airways overbook all flights, our flight overbooked by 54 seats. We are asked whether we would like to voluteer for the alternative route via Vancouver, oh and wait for it.....£1,000 for our troubles. The Lee's were first in and after 30 mins we are told the good news, we would be used as volunteers , what a way to start the trip and only 12 hours later than scheduled! Celebrated in Vancouver with bloody Marys and a bottle of the finest pinot gris on the menu.

Check in for flight Vancouver to Mexico City with the "friendly" national airline - Mexicana. We are told "sorry your booking is in the system but no link to your eticket. BA had to give you tickets, without ticket no flight - sorry!" We are sent to BA desk, of course no one was there, its 10pm! Lots of toing and froing with the airline staff, who are about as helpful as a chocolate teapot and who seem to be expert at giving us lots of blank looks, we are offered a lifeline 10 mins before check in closes and we make the flight.

Expecting a hot meal and a cold beer, we are sorely disappointed - instead we are offered a dry ham croissant and a lukewarm beer, by this point we we are too tired to care - 5 hours later we arrive in Mexico City.
